Born in Sunderland during the post-war baby-boom, Malcolm Ludvigsen studied Mathematics at Surrey and Newcastle Universities, then taught at the University of Botswana. With a doctorate in Maths, he then travelled to study in Pittsburgh where he completed his second doctorate (in Physics) before embarking on lecturerships and fellowships at Universities in the UK, Sweden and New Zealand.
During a sabbatical from his professorship in Sweden, Malcolm decided to concentrate on his painting, and since 2000, aside from some teaching at York University, he has been painting full time.
Painting in Oils, Malcolm has a particular interest in figure and plein-air painting, painting in the open air wherever possible to achieve the vibrancy and vitality his work is recognised for. His subject matter is the ordinary, the domestic and the common place.
?ɬ¢?¢‚Äö¬¨?Ö‚ÄúI do not seek out the spectacular, the shocking or the disturbing. I?ɬ¢?¢‚Äö¬¨?¢‚Äû¬¢m drawn to the beautiful, but do not seek it out. If my paintings have any purpose, apart from my own pleasure in painting them, it is to show the extraordinary in the ordinary.?ɬ¢?¢‚Äö¬¨?Ǭù
